MOVIE REVIEW - Suspect Zero (2004)
Director: E Elias Merhige
Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley, Carrie-Anne Moss
Suspect Zero is a serial killer thriller with small twists. Aaron Eckhart is FBI agent Thomas Mackelway and he has just been reassigned to New Mexico. Ben Kingsley is the killer he is investigating. Carrie Anne-Moss is pretty scenery.
This is a perfect example of a possibly good movie ruined by advertising campaign. The trailers had destroyed all the little plot twists. So if you haven't seen a trailer for this movie yet don't read any further. Go rent it you might enjoy it more than me.
*SPOILERS *
Otherwise you'll know way before the FBI agents that Ben Kingsley is killing serial killers. Also that Ben Kingsley is finding them using remote viewing. That Kingsley is also hunting down the elusive Suspect Zero.
*SPOILERS END*
The film may have been a whole lot better if I hadn't know all those things before watching. They would have actually been the surprise twists they were meant to be. But what I get is a plodding thriller in which I'm watching the FBI agent waiting for him to figure out the stuff I already know.
It also seems they cut some of the movie back. There is moment between Eckhart and Moss that comes across as out of place for the situation, it makes me think they left a couple of scenes between them on the cutting room floor.
The acting isn't bad. Kingsley is suitably over the top and distant whilst Eckhart holds his own as the burnt out agent. Moss just seems to have been used just to get a female face in the movie. The photography and camerawork throughout is bleak and bleached out in look, much like the thrillers it is trying to emulate, eg Seven, Silence of the Lambs.
The Good: Interesting plot.
The Bad: Shame most of it was ruined in trailers.
The Ugly: Very bleak tone
Overall: mediocre. 4/10
LOST fans please note that this movie contains an appearance from William Mapother (Ethan Rom from Lost)
